What kind of team is the Chesterfield Chain Gang? (CCG)

The Chesterfield Chain Gang is a mountain biking team for middle and high school students (rising 5th–12th graders) who live in Chesterfield County. We train and compete in the cross-country (XC) discipline of mountain biking. Our riders race in the fall through the Virginia NICA (National Interscholastic Cycling Association) league and may choose to race in the spring VAHS (Virginia High School Series), though VAHS participation is optional.

Is mountain biking safe?

Our recruitment begins in late spring, with the season officially starting in July. Riders must be rising 5th–12th graders and live in Chesterfield County to be eligible. Because we have a limited number of spots, early interest and participation in informational and recruitment events are encouraged.

When are new riders added to the team?

What do we need to do to join the team?

In March or April, we begin sharing information about upcoming recruiting events via Facebook and Instagram. Parents should fill out our interest form (click “Connect” on our website) to get on the mailing list.
To join, families must:

  • Attend a Prospective Rider Zoom Meeting (held in May or June)

  • Sign up for and attend a New Rider Skills Clinic (held late May or early June)
These help us get to know your child and ensure they’re a good fit for the team and sport.

Mountain biking does carry some risk, like any sport, but we follow safety protocols very closely. According to NICA’s national injury data (2018–2020), only about 2.5% of student-athletes experienced an injury annually. Practices and races are supervised, and all riders are trained to ride safely. We use risk management strategies, proper supervision, and course inspections to minimize danger. Safety is always our top priority.

Where do you ride?

Most of our practices are held at Pocahontas State Park, which has excellent singletrack trails and fire roads ideal for both new and experienced riders. Occasionally, we ride at other local parks to give riders variety and prep them for different types of race terrain. Races are held at various venues around Virginia, depending on the NICA and VAHS schedules.

Will my child be riding alone?

No, riders are never alone during practices. They ride in small groups that are led and followed (“swept”) by adult coaches. Older or more experienced students may help lead, but there’s always at least one adult coach per group. During races, coaches can’t be on the course, but trained course marshals and sweepers monitor all riders to ensure everyone’s safety.

When are team practices and races?

We practice twice a week, usually on Wednesday evenings and Sunday mornings or afternoons.

  • The NICA season runs from early July to early November.

  • The VAHS season runs from early March to late May.
Not all riders do both seasons, but participation in the fall NICA season is required to join the spring VAHS series.

Does my child have to attend every practice and race?

While we know families are busy, we encourage riders to attend all practices whenever possible. Regular practice builds skill, confidence, endurance, and team connection. For the fall NICA season, riders must register with VA NICA and are expected to participate in at least 3 of the 4 races. The spring VAHS races are optional, and riders can participate based on their goals and availability.

What are the costs involved?

Costs can vary, but here’s a general breakdown (subject to change):

  • Team Registration Fee: ~$30 per season

  • NICA League & Race Fees: ~$300

  • VAHS Race Fees (optional): ~$195–$245 depending on purchase date

  • Team Jersey: ~$49–$75

  • Equipment: Riders need a mountain bike, helmet, gloves, shoes, glasses, and a few bike tools

  • Travel Costs: Some families camp or stay overnight for races

  • Annual Pocahontas Parking Pass: Required for practice

We work to keep the sport affordable and offer suggestions for used gear or discounts through bike shops.

What qualifications do coaches need?

All coaches are registered through NICA and must pass a background check. They complete various levels of NICA coach training, including first aid and youth coaching principles, to ensure they can support our riders safely and effectively.

What is expected of a Chain Gang team member?

We want riders (and families!) to have fun, gain confidence, and grow as athletes and people. Riders are expected to:

  • Show good sportsmanship

  • Follow the team’s and NICA’s Code of Conduct

  • Embrace the Six Pillars of Character: respect, responsibility, trustworthiness, fairness, caring, and citizenship
We’re a team first, and we support one another—on and off the trail.

What if my child isn’t very athletic?

No problem! Our team is about personal growth, not performance. If your child enjoys biking and is willing to challenge themselves, they’ll do great. Many first-year riders set goals to simply finish a race—and that’s a big win. We celebrate progress, effort, and team spirit, not just podium spots.

Is my child’s current bike okay to use?

The ideal bike is a hardtail mountain bike with front suspension and disc brakes. A safe, properly fitting bike is essential. We’ll go over bike requirements at the prospective rider meeting. We encourage new riders to start with what they have, and we’ll help evaluate if it’s appropriate. Many families upgrade over time. Registered NICA riders can access discounts at select local bike shops.

Can I ride with my child during practice?

To ride with the team, parents must become NICA-certified volunteer coaches, which includes registration, background check, training, and a fee. Coach assignments are based on team needs, so you may not always ride with your child. Parents are welcome to ride in the park independently during practice if not coaching.

Are there volunteer opportunities that don’t involve riding?

Absolutely! Our team runs on volunteer help, and we have many non-riding roles—from organizing snacks and equipment, to handling communications, managing jersey orders, and helping on race day. We welcome and appreciate all parent support.
